Product Description:
Toxicogenomics analyses the activity of a particular toxin or chemical substance on living tissue based upon a profiling of its known effects on genetic material. Toxicogenomics is important because it may enhance understanding of mechanisms of toxicity, cellular defence systems, and drug action. If this technique is proven to work, it could be used in a similar way for toxicology and toxin-determination to DNA-testing in the forensic identification of individuals.

Book Description:
One of the most important recent discoveries in science is the green fluorescent protein, isolated from a bioluminescent jellyfish. The gene that codes for this protein is active in any type of cell, from microbes to humans, producing a “day-glo” dye visible as a bright green light in the microscope. The power of the gene is that by using recombinant DNA technology. GFP can be spliced to any protein, essentially painting that protein green. When such a spliced protein is inside a cell. Further, time-lapse microscopy can be used to examine how that protein and the cellular components that it is part of move within the cell during the cell’s life cycle.
This Methods in Enzymology volume deals with the utility of green fluorescent protein (GFP). The OVID database (including MEDLINE, Current Contents, and other sources) lists nine references to GFP for the ten-year period 1985-1994. In contrast, in less than four years thereafter, over 500 references are listed, a testament to the rapid growth of interest in this probe.
This volume documents many diverse uses for this interesting molecule in disciplines that broadly span biology. The methods presented include shortcuts and conveniences not included in previously published sources. The techniques are described in a context that allows comparisons to other related methodologies-such comparisons are valuable to readers who must adapt existing procedures to new systems. Also, so far as possible, methodologies have been presented in a manner that stresses their general applicability and potential limitations. The volume provides a substantial and current overview of the extant methodology in the field and a view of its rapid development.
The critically acclaimed laboratory standard for more than forty years, Methods in Enzymology is one of the most highly respected publications in the field of biochemistry. Since 1955, each volume has been eagerly awaited, frequently consulted, and praised by researchers and reviewers alike. Now with more than 300 volumes (all of them still in print), the series contains much material still relevant today–truly an essential publication for researchers in all fields of life sciences.

Book Description:
Most research in the life sciences involves a core set of molecular-based equipment and methods, for which there is no shortage of step-by-step protocols. Nonetheless, there remains an exceedingly high number of inquiries placed to commercial technical support groups, especially regarding problems.

Molecular Biology Problem Solver: A Laboratory Guide asks the reader to consider crucial questions, such as:

  • Have you selected the most appropriate research strategy?
  • Have you identified the issues critical to your successful application of a technique?
  • Are you familiar with the limitations of a given technique?
  • When should common procedural rules of thumb not be applied?
  • What strategies could you apply to resolve a problem?

A unique question-based format reviews common assumptions and laboratory practices, with the aim of offering a firm understanding of how techniques and procedures work, as well as how to avoid problems. Some major issues explored by the book’s expert contributors include:

  • Working safely with biological samples and radioactive materials
  • DNA and RNA purification
  • PCR
  • Protein and nucleid acid hybridization
  • Prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems
  • Properly using and maintaining laboratory equipment

Product Details
»Book Publisher: John Wiley & Sons (17 March, 2004)

»Amazon Rating:

Book Description:
Recent advances in molecular and biophysical techniques, particularly fluorescence and live cell imaging, are revolutionizing the study of cell motility. New bioprobes not only reveal simple intracellular localization, but also contain details of post-translational modifications, conformational state and protein-protein interactions. Coupling these insights with complementary advances in genetic and biochemical methods is enabling scientists to understand the processes involved in cell motility - from molecular motors to cell movements in vivo in a range of organisms and cell types.

This book features landmark essays that provide an up to date and fascinating account of current research and concepts in cell motility. These cover the roles of molecular motors that drive movement and their interactions with the cytoskeleton as well as membrane dynamics that allow cells to change shape and to move.

Cell motility plays a key role in development - there are chapters on the genetics of cell migration, the regulation of contact repulsion in growth cones, and the progression from cell migration to cell-cell adhesion. Cell motility is directional - experts describe the molecules that regulate chemotaxis, allowing cells to migrate along pathways specified by chemical gradients. Finally, cell motility can be perturbed by mutation–metastasis occurs when cells lose their normal intercellular interactions and invade other tissue types. All these processes are regulated by signals from the environment, including other tissues in the body, and the various molecules that transmit and transduce these signals are discussed.

This book is a ‘must read’ for cell biologists working in a variety of fields, from development to wound healing, at all levels - post-doctoral fellows, post-graduate students and lab technicians. It is also stimulating reading for molecular and developmental biologists, biophysicists and biochemists.
